Required Equipment and Reference Material
- For course studying we recommend large screen devices 10 inches or above.
- For the City & Guilds remote invigilated exam service, a Windows PC/Laptop with a Webcam will be required. Check the City & Guilds requirements HERE.
Reference Books: The essential book to take into the exam is the ‘IET Code of Practice: Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation 5th Edition’
- Amendment 4 published in April 2026 has made minor changes to section 722 of BS 7671.
- The 18th Edition Regs book can be taken into the exam: Amd 2 (Brown book) until October 2026, Amd 4 can also be used from April 15th 2026.
Learner Entry Requirements
EVE is designed for qualified electricians requiring a level 3 award in the Requirements for the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations.
If you have selected an exam package, you will need to provide evidence that you have one of the following:
Pathway A – Modern Route (Formal Electrotechnical Qualifications)
Candidate must hold ONE of the following current Level 3 qualifications (or recognised equivalence) to be eligible:
✔️ City & Guilds
2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures & the Environment)
2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
5357 Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification
2356 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
2346 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
2347 City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification (if applicable/recognised)
→ Note: other Awarding Body equivalences are acceptable if mapped through the EAS (Electrotechnical Assessment Specification) table.
✔️ Non-City & Guilds equivalents
You can use EAL Level 3 NVQ or Diploma versions provided they’re recognised as equivalent to the above City & Guilds units.
(Not always listed by every centre, but NICEIC/NAPIT will accept if recognised via EAS equivalence.)
👉 Essential note: Qualifications must have been achieved within the past ~5 years OR you must demonstrate you have remained current with relevant CPD such as an up-to-date BS 7671 (18th Edition) or equivalent.
Pathway B – Competent Worker Card Route
Candidate may provide a recognised industry gold card or equivalent card which demonstrates competency and experience:
✔️ ECS Gold Card – Electrical Installation, Maintenance, Domestic Electrician (any with appropriate scope)
✔️ JIB Electrician Card (or Approved Electrician Card, recognised under EAS/industry standards)
These are accepted instead of a formal qualification if the card demonstrates actual competence and up-to-date ability on site.
Pathway C – Experienced Worker / Legacy Qualification Route
For electricians who qualified before modern NVQ structures:
✔️ Historical certificates such as City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 (or 236/2351) may be accepted but only if evidence of currency is provided:
Demonstrate recent relevant work experience
Up-to-date 18th Edition BS 7671 certificate (important supporting evidence)
Evidence of continued competence (test sheets from recent work, references, etc.)
However, this route is more discretionary and usually has to be verified directly by the centre and by the scheme provider (NICEIC/NAPIT/SELECT); not all centres automatically accept legacy routes without strong evidence.
🛠 NICEIC, NAPIT & SELECT Expectations
NICEIC
NICEIC will use the EAS (Electrotechnical Assessment Specification) lists to map acceptable entry qualifications/equivalences for EV qualifications.
They require evidence of competence and currency (including regs/testing) for membership and self-certification.
Legacy Quiet experience routes may need to be verified under Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA/VAR).

NAPIT
NAPIT also refers to recognised lists (similar to EAS); qualifying certificates must be appropriate Level 3 and current.
NAPIT registration typically also considers actual installation experience alongside certificates.

SELECT (Scotland)
Equivalent SVQs can be accepted (e.g., SCQF Level 7 in Electrical Installation with currency evidence).
Scottish providers list similar qualification equivalences and generally require proof of competent status.

You will be required to provide evidence of your existing level 3 (or similar) qualification(s) as listed above before we book your exam.
Exams are operated via the City and Guilds remote invigilation service, these sessions are usually available at 08.00, 11.30 and 4pm from 7 days from the time you request the exam.
Therefore, it's not unreasonable to achieve a 9-day turnaround from the time of booking your exam to being qualified.
