Q4. How does a BS 3036 rewirable fuse affect the current-carrying capacity of a cable? Dave Austin and Gary Gundry look at a typical exam question concerning the use of a BS 3036 fuse, and discuss the correction factor that should be used to adjust the tabulated current carrying-capacity of a cable.

Amazingly, the use of BS 3036 rewirable fuses is still recognised by the wiring regulations.  However, such devices have a higher fusing factor than other protective devices.  So, during overload conditions, it is vital that selected ratings are correctly coordinated with the circuit conductors to be protected (i.e. the conductors are correctly sized).
